Cult TV Awards 2012 winners Featured

1960s and 1970s ITC catalogue has a big impact on this year’s celebrations. Doctor Who gets bumped off by Sherlock, and a pair of new fairy tale adaptions do well. All this in Cult TV's 19th annual poll of true fans who enjoy the best in extraordinary fictional television.

ITC - a British Production powershouse scoops big in the Cult TV Awards 2012The Champions, the British show from 1968 starring Stuart Damon, Alexandra Bastedo and William Gaunt picked up the top award, the "Hall of Fame - Series", in this year’s Cult TV Awards. Also winning from Lord Lew Grade’s ITC production house was Annette Andre, a regular supporter of the Cult TV Festivals who played Jeannie in Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) (with a new series currently in development by ITV)picked up the “Hall 0f Fame – Actress” award; and Number 6, the nameless lead in Patrick McGoohan’s prescient series The Prisoner, was added to the “Cult TV Hall of Fame – Hero” roll call. In addition, the Blu-ray edition of The Persuaders! scooped the “DVD/Blu-ray Presentation” Award for the Network label.

To complete the ITC celebration, the glowing-eyed marionette The Hood entered the “Hall of Fame – Villain” category for his pivotal role in Thunderbirds. Meanwhile the hero of Roobarb, the dog Roobarb of course, picked up the “Hall of Fame – Animated Character Award” – let's hope that Custard the Cat doesn't feel too put out!.

New fantasy series have gone down well with the Cult TV audience, with Grimm (Watch) and Once Upon a Time (Channel 5) picking up the “Best New Premium Channel Series” and “Best New Free-To-Air Series” respectively. Viewers wanted to see more of Alcatraz (Sky One) which was crowned “Show They Should Not Have Cancelled”, after having a run of just 13 episodes. Meanwhile, the much vaunted Homeland (Channel 4) only managed to pick up the award for “New Title Sequence”.

There was something of a shock in the “Best Returning Free-To-Air” Series category, as Sherlock narrowly edged out Doctor Who in a tight race. This is the first time the Gallifreyan has failed to win this award since the show’s return in 2005 – the one exception being 2008-2009 when no new episodes were aired during the qualifying period. It wasn’t all bad news for the Time Lord – the classic series was represented again in the “Hall of Fame – Director” canon via Michael E Briant, who amongst a long CV was around for the Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker eras, including classics such as “The Green Death” and “The Robots of Death”. Composer Murray Gold, who has masterminded new era Doctor Who music, picked up the “Hall of Fame – Music” Award.

The penultimate season of Fringe, meanwhile, picked up the “Best Returning Premium Channel Series” for Sky One.  The current season, currently broadcasting on the channel, is its last. Fringe was a in a dead heat winner for this Award last year with the final season of Lie To Me. Fringe co-creator and executive producer JJ Abrams picked up the “Hall of Fame – Writer” award.

The sit-com Sykes, starring the late Eric Sykes who died in July 2012, was celebrated with his show winning the “Best Repeat Series” Award. Comedy was also celebrated with the “Best Mini-Series/ Special” Award going to Holy Flying Circus, a drama-comedy looking at what happened when the Monty Python team released the movie “Life of Brian”.  Incidentally, the DVD release of this TV film was also the “Release of the Week” on the debut edition of the review show Behind The Sofa earlier in 2012.

Automan - A Glen A Larson ProductionOther highlights included the iconic Brian Blessed receiving the “Hall of Fame – Actor” Award, and Barry Letts achieving the “Hall of Fame – Producer” award - known mainly for his work on Doctor Who, he also produced the likes of Moonbase 3 (1973), Lorna Doone (1976), Treasure Island (1977), Sexton Blake and the Demon God (1978), Dombey & Son (1983), and The Invisible Man (1984).

We extend our grateful thanks to everyone who took part in either or both the nominations and voting stages, and made choices that were so in-keeping the ethos of these awards. Our thanks also to the two companies who provided the incentive prizes at both these stages – Network for the nominations round, and Fabulous Films for the voting round.
