Half Light - back on DVDDemi Moore stars in this romantic, supernatural thriller about a best-selling novelist who escapes to a remote Scottish cottage after the tragic death of her young son. Rachel Carlson (Moore - "Ghost", "A Few Good Men") leaves her troubled relationship with her husband behind to concentrate on her latest book, unexpectedly becoming close friends with a local lighthouse keeper (Hans Matheson - "Sherlock Holmes", "300: Rise of an Empire").

Strange events suggest that Rachel's son (Beans El-Balawi - "28 Weeks Later") is trying to communicate with her from beyond the grave, but to what end? The more Rachel learns about the history of her new locale, the more disturbed she becomes, and a local medium (Therese Bradley - "Young Adam") only adds to her sense of unease. The film is written and directed by Craig Rosenberg (Lost, "After the Sunset").

"Half Light" is a professionally-constructed piece of drama. Despite many genre clichés and a beautiful if overpowering soundtrack, the film quickly sucks you into its narrative. The Welsh, Scottish and English locations all look absolutely stunning, giving the story a real sense of place and character.

Moore is solid in the central role, ably conveying the grief felt by Rachel and her gradual romantic attachment to Angus, the lighthouse keeper. The supporting cast are all fine, including Ian Henry Cusick (Lost, The 100) as Rachel's estranged husband, James Cosmo ("Braveheart", Game of Thrones) as the friendly local policeman, and Kate Isitt (Coupling) as Rachel's best friend.

The story does have its fair quota of predictable twists, but at the same time there are enough unanticipated and malevolent elements introduced in the final act that help to save the film from becoming too twee and syrupy.

There are no special features on the disc with the exception of optional Hard-Of-Hearing subtitles.
